Micro-Ferry Network
Bay Flyer Secures $1.9M in Grants for Electric Micro-Ferry Network
Bay Flyer and its partners have secured $1.9 million in clean-energy grant funding to accelerate development of an electric Micro-Ferry Network—a new class of short-distance, low-wake electric ferries designed to serve emerging waterfront districts across the San Francisco Bay Area.
These awards support the region’s transition toward zero-emission micro-ferry mobility, complementing existing large-vessel ferry operators and improving multimodal access between innovation hubs, marinas, research districts, and mixed-use shoreline communities.
Building a Modern Electric Marine Network
Bay Flyer is developing a fleet of electric micro-ferries—compact, fast, quiet vessels optimized for short-route service. Unlike traditional large-capacity ferries, micro-ferries are uniquely suited for:
- High-frequency shuttle routes
- Shallow-draft waterfront sites
- Low-wake, low-impact operations
- Corporate and commuter mobility
- Quiet, clean arrivals in dense shoreline districts
This vessel class creates a nimble, energy-efficient link between shoreline workplaces and destinations underserved by traditional transit.
Charging Infrastructure: Foundation of Zero-Emission Operations
A portion of the grant funding supports the deployment of high-power shore-based charging systems at key waterfront locations. These chargers are engineered for:
- Fast, reliable turn-times
- Continuous Micro-Ferry operations
- Safety and grid coordination
- Future scalability to additional shoreline districts
This infrastructure forms the backbone of a sustainable, expandable network for electric water transportation.
Designed to Complement Regional Ferry Service
Bay Flyer’s micro-ferry model **enhances—not replaces—** established public ferry routes. By focusing on short, district-scale connections, electric micro-ferries can:
- Reduce peak-hour roadway congestion
- Improve access to growing employment districts
- Connect corporate campuses and research centers
- Operate in locations unsuitable for large ferries
- Support long-term environmental and decarbonization goals
The Micro-Ferry Network fits naturally within ongoing waterfront electrification initiatives.
Regional Opportunity
Across the Bay Area, demand is accelerating for flexible, zero-emission water mobility solutions that serve:
- Biotechnology + life science corridors
- Innovation and research campuses
- Mixed-use shoreline developments
- Corporate commuter programs
- Emerging urban waterfront projects
Bay Flyer is engaged with public agencies, shoreline property owners, and private partners to advance district-scale mobility across the Bay.
Looking Ahead
This funding represents a significant milestone in establishing an electric Micro-Ferry Network that supports cleaner, quieter, faster water mobility throughout the Bay Area.
Additional updates on fleet development, pilot operations, and infrastructure rollout will be shared as coordination continues with regional partners and public-sector agencies.
